Memory is the dividing line
A companion that remembers and one that does not are different products, whatever the feature list says. Details you mention — a name, a plan, a mood — should come back later without being restated.
This is where most of the category disappoints. The first ten messages read well, then the thread resets and you are re-establishing context with something that behaves as if you just met.
Does the personality setting do anything?
A real implementation changes the phrasing visibly. Pick a different disposition and the sentence rhythm, vocabulary and level of directness should move with it.
